Airbus faced a critical challenge in modernizing the delivery of its helicopter pilot training materials. Traditionally distributed in print, these manuals required frequent updates, leading to logistical inefficiencies, high costs, and limited interactivity. The company sought a more dynamic, scalable way to provide learning resources to trainees, particularly in environments where fast, secure, and reliable access was crucial.

To address this, Airbus envisioned a digital platform tailored for Android tablets that could support multiple formats, including PDF and EPUB 3. However, the requirement extended beyond simple viewing; Airbus needed a robust reader with interactive features such as handwritten annotations, typed notes, bookmarking, and advanced search capabilities. This posed technical challenges in both UI design and performance optimization, especially when working with large training documents. Furthermore, Airbus required an admin web portal capable of managing and securely delivering specific training content to enrolled individuals.

In parallel, integrating this system with their existing infrastructure required building a server-side application with secure RESTful services to synchronize user data, document versions, and access controls. Delivering a seamless, multi-device experience while safeguarding proprietary training content necessitated a thoughtful combination of server technologies and database design.

Krasamo partnered with Airbus to design and develop a powerful native Android tablet app tailored to the needs of helicopter pilot trainees. Built with EPUB 3 and PDF compatibility, the reader featured advanced note-taking tools, including support for both handwritten and typed annotations. A clean, intuitive UI allowed users to highlight content, create bookmarks, and perform full-text searches across materials, drastically improving user engagement and learning efficiency.

To support this, a web-based admin portal was developed using Java with GWT-RPC and JAX-RS REST services, enabling training administrators to assign specific materials to each user. The backend infrastructure was powered by PostgreSQL and REST APIs, ensuring fast, secure content delivery and easy future maintenance. The seamless integration between the Android client and web portal offered Airbus complete visibility and control over their training resource distribution.

The platform gave pilots and helicopter owners secure, on-demand access to training materials, anytime, anywhere. No more thumbing through thick manuals; users could instantly search and find exactly what they needed. During Airbus training, they could even personalize their materials with custom annotations, turning each lesson into a tailored reference for safer, more confident flying.
