Challenges

Zion National Park, managed by the National Park Service (NPS), faced a growing challenge: how to make the park’s rich history and stunning landmarks more accessible to visitors, especially in areas without reliable cell service. Traditional maps and guidebooks were not delivering the level of engagement expected by modern visitors. Park administrators sought a solution that could not only preserve and present historical data, but also deliver it in an immersive and interactive way—regardless of connectivity.

In addition to connectivity challenges, the park’s vast size and remote location made it difficult for visitors to appreciate many of the lesser-known historical sites and roads. Park rangers could only guide a limited number of visitors, and physical displays had spatial and budgetary limitations. They needed a solution that would scale, remain sustainable, and offer a rich, self-guided experience.

Furthermore, the National Park Service required a solution that met high technical standards—combining interactivity, offline functionality, and visual fidelity. It was essential to maintain historical integrity while introducing advanced features like 3D panoramas and high-resolution imagery, all while ensuring a seamless experience on both iOS and Android platforms.

Solutions

To solve these challenges, our team developed “Tour of Zion”, a native mobile application designed for both iOS and Android. The app showcases Zion’s historic roads, landmarks, and scenic viewpoints through a series of immersive features. Visitors can explore high-resolution historical maps, panoramic views, and interactive 3D models that allow users to rotate, zoom, and pan landmarks right on their device—even without Wi-Fi or mobile data.

The application leverages a robust local database, enabling all content—text, images, and 3D scenes—to load seamlessly offline. To achieve the realistic panoramic effect, our engineers implemented custom 3D computer graphics techniques that map input images onto 3D surfaces, creating a vivid and responsive viewing experience. This approach preserved the authenticity of historical photos while enhancing user interactivity.

By combining storytelling, advanced visualization, and offline access, the Tour of Zion app elevated the visitor experience and set a new standard for digital interpretation in national parks. It not only deepens engagement with Zion’s rich heritage but also empowers users to discover and connect with the landscape on their own terms, anytime and anywhere.
