Challenges

As part of its push to deliver a more intuitive and convenient user experience, the client—an established player in the smart fireplace industry—set out to integrate their devices with Amazon Alexa. The goal was to enable hands-free control of fireplaces using natural voice commands, while ensuring secure authentication, low-latency response, and accurate state synchronization.

However, integrating with Alexa’s Smart Home Skill API posed several technical challenges. The client’s system had no existing infrastructure to support Alexa directives such as TurnOn, TurnOff, or SetTargetTemperature. Furthermore, the server needed to reliably reflect device state back to Amazon through Alexa’s ChangeReport and StateReport mechanisms, which demanded real-time communication and event-driven design.

Additionally, proper handling of OAuth 2.0 flows for account linking and secure user authentication was required. Ensuring consistency across multiple devices, users, and locations added to the system’s complexity, especially in scenarios involving disconnections or state mismatches between the cloud and physical fireplace units.

Solutions

Krasamo developed and deployed a complete Alexa Smart Home Skill tailored to the client’s infrastructure. This included implementing a secure OAuth 2.0 account linking system, enabling users to easily connect their smart fireplaces to Alexa using their existing account credentials.

A cloud-based fulfillment layer was created to handle directives from Alexa, such as Alexa.PowerController and Alexa.ThermostatController. These directives were then translated into internal commands using the server’s optimized architecture, ensuring efficient processing and accurate execution. Alexa’s Event Gateway was integrated to support proactive state reporting, delivering ChangeReports to reflect real-time device activity.

By leveraging AWS Lambda and API Gateway, the solution was scalable, resilient, and cost-effective. The improved Redis-based state management ensured devices responded accurately even in low-connectivity scenarios, and optimized mutex-based queuing ensured that commands were executed promptly without draining server resources.

The Alexa integration transformed fireplaces into a seamless part of the connected home, giving homeowners hands-free convenience, real-time control, and added safety. By enabling natural voice commands and accurate state reporting, the client strengthened its product’s appeal, expanded its reach within the smart home ecosystem, and positioned itself as an innovator in residential heating technology.
